“Don’t say it like that, Charlie. I wanted to protect you.” She tugs on
the edge of my cardigan, pulling me toward her. “I love you. You’re the most
important thing in my life, do you understand?”
There’s a desperation in her eyes that tightens my throat. Swallowing
hard, I nod.
She lets go of me with a sigh. “Maybe I took it too far.” She sweeps her
dreadlocks over her shoulder and twists them tightly. “All I’ve ever wanted was
to keep you safe.”
Safe. The world spirals, cold and slippery,
down my spine. “What are
you so afraid of?”
She opens her mouth only to shut it again.
Jax growls.
We turn as he claws at the door.
“The only thing there is to be afraid of,” she
whispers. “The monsters.”

Charlie
lives in a secluded woods with her Aunt Rachel and Jax, the dog. They
live in a cabin and have minimal contact with the outside world. Charlie
is hoping to go to college and will be old enough to make her own
decisions soon. She is mildly aware there is something strange about her
life. Her Aunt doesn't want her to be seen by anyone or have a phone.
She is cut off from the world.
This book starts with a spooky walk in the woods. No sounds from the animals and Jax is on guard. Little does Charlie know, her wish is about to come true. Leaving her cabin is not going to be what she expects though. Her Aunt is kidnapped and Charlie has to trust the only person left.
Sebastian is a vampire and Charlie's only lifeline. He is left with the task of killing her but first, he wants her help. Aunt Rachel has many secrets and Sebastian wants more than one answer. Charlie is special but this mystery is only just starting to unravel.
A world with Vampires, hunters and fairies. A war is brewing and everyone needs to take their places. A broken king and some amazing fantasy skills. This book is a fabulous start to a new series. It will leave you wanting more. It will also give you more questions than answers but it's a whirlwind adventure.
Charlie and Sebastian are both great characters. Their romance is intense. I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I want to know more! 5 stars out of 5.
