The Truth About Us ♥ Blog Tour ♥ Review ♥ Giveaway

The Truth About Us

by

The present is built on the past. But what if your past is a lie?

When 18 yr old Abigail Bridges’ grandmother dies, she leaves behind a mysterious letter asking her to unravel a hidden family secret.

There is only one rule: tell no one.

But meeting strangers in the dark and receiving old journals dating back to the Holocaust isn’t what she bargained for. Neither is a chance encounter with the enigmatic, brown-eyed Kaden Oliver, who makes her want to discard her usually reserved nature.

After a key clue goes missing, Abigail ignores her grandmother’s rule and tells Kade everything. Together, they begin to unravel a terrifying secret. The truth may set others free, but for Abigail, it will tear her family apart.

Now, she must decide between continuing to uncover her families’ lies or burying the past once and for all.

Not much in life registered higher on the creepy scale than staring a corpse in the face. Except maybe when it was someone she loved. Someone with secrets.
Abigail Bridges took in the orange tint of her grandmother’s skin, trying her best to ignore the nose-wrinkling scent of mothballs and fresh flowers lingering in the air. It wasn’t every day you buried someone you loved. And it wasn’t every day you got a letter from the grave.
Reaching into the pocket of her black pants, she fingered the edges of the folded stationary she discovered in her grandmother’s old jewelry box, tucked beneath her freshwater pearls like buried treasure.
Ten years ago, I discovered a family secret, one that could very much change our lives… The words burned themselves in Abby’s skull, marring this goodbye with an unexpected ambiguity.
Since the moment her grandmother died, Abby dreamt of hearing from her again, dreamt of seeing the familiar crease of her aged skin spread with the curl of her smile, those sparkling blue eyes set off by a shock of thick, white hair. Only four days had passed since her death, and the ache in her chest reminded her of the loss every day. They were days of numbness and disbelief, but of all the things Abby hoped to hear in the wake of her passing, this wasn’t it.

Abby is discovering the family secret through a quest. Her late grandmother, GG has left a trail of letters, journal entries and hidden boxes. The truth is out there but the consequence is that you cannot take it back.

I'm not sure why but when I read the book synopsis I decided the twist to this story was going to be supernatural. I was way off the bench mark. The truth about us is a historical reflection set around World War Two. Some events are not for the faint-hearted.

Abby is an average high school student. She's quiet and keeps her head down. Her life is turned upside down when her grandmother dies. GG leaves a set of clues to discover a family secret. Each clue leaves more unanswered questions. Along the way, Abby becomes close to Kaden. He's a boy from her school who like her doesn't try to be noticed. Abby isn't supposed to tell anyone she's looking into her grandmother's suspicions but Abby finds some secrets are easier with friends. Abby and Kaden discover there is more to life than following the rules.

What do a murdered detective, an old wartime journal and a family secret have in common? The truth about us is well written and the suspense kept me turning every page. I don't read many history based books. The plot unveil felt unique and the characters had good chemistry.

4 stars out of 5.
