About the author:
J.C. Welker is an author who's been, among other things, a fashion designer, a filmmaker and a kickboxer (seriously). Her short documentaries, which focused on homeless Iraq veterans and lgbtq+ issues in the military have been featured on CURRENT TV, and her debut novel THE WISHING HEART won first place in the paranormal category of the 2016 YARWA Rosemary Awards. She continues to work towards giving a voice to stories that are needed, while facing magic and monsters along the way.

Question One: What was your inspiration behind The Wishing Heart?
The premise of the story came about early on, of a girl looking for love and healing through stories and magic, and finds herself immersed in a world where all the myths she only ever read about turn out to be more real than not. In many ways it’s a metaphor of some of my own experiences growing up, at a time where I felt invisible, unloved, was hiding who I was, and like the character I looked to stories to fill that hole.
Question Two: Who was your favorite character in the book and why?
I’d have to say Rebel, because there are many aspects of her wants and desires that I relate to. She’s a character I have a special bond with and it was easier for me to find her voice than it was for the other characters.
Question Three: Rebel is an interesting character and a master at her craft. Could you talk us through a normal day in the life of Rebel?
Great question!
Well there is no such thing as a normal day in the life of Rebel. When she’s not being forced to do chores for Madam Gramone’s conservatory, she would either be hawking something on the black market, or hanging out at the Freebooters Club where her and Jaxon would converse over whatever thievery he had planned, and then the night would end with her being chased by someone.
Question Four: Your authors profile (Goodreads) explains your interest in telling LGBTQ stories. What made you choose a same sex romance for Rebel and why is this important to you?
Growing up I never had queer stories to cling to. It was always fairytales of the princess looking for her prince. There were no Korra and Asami, or sailor moon having a happy ending. Not until much later time did I actually begin seeing positive representation that showed me I was visible. If I had a book like my own when I was younger it might have made life more bearable, reassuring me that my love mattered. That I mattered.
Which is something I wish to perpetuate for others, that queer people can have their own fairytales, we are our own heroes, and we can write our own stories. Stories can be healing. They are for me, including writing this one. And my greatest wish is that my book will reach the hearts who need it.
Question Five: Your take on genies was really clever. Is there a story behind this idea?
Really just a lot of research, with all the different mythologies and legends that surround it. But for Anjeline I wanted her to be able to defy those myths and also connect her to real life.
Question Six: What can we expect next?
Currently I’m working on a Middle Grade fantasy.

Rebel has never known family. She does what she has to. Survival is her existence her escape is to the fantasy world of books. Rebel is known as the fingersmith. She is crafty with a switchblade and could pick any lock. She is trying to find a cure for her broken heart. She is sent on a mission to recover a pricey antique, but she is unaware how much it could cost her. The vase she steals isn't what it seems, and she has just signed up for the chase of her life. The vase is a vessel for a Jinni. Everyone has a wish, but wishes have consequences. Nothing is given for free especially when greed is involved.
The Jinni, Anjeline is a prisoner to the vessel and has to watch the misfortunes of those selfish wishes. She wants to be free more than anything but anything is a high price.
These two unlikely friends make a pact to help each other to put right what has gone wrong.
The Wishing Heart is full of adventure and fantasy. I would recommend it to fans of authors such as Cassandra Clare.
This book is a girl-girl romance novel which is a clean read. It is a lengthy standalone story, however, sets up the next mission.
I loved this book and was hooked from the very start. Easily a favourite read; Added to the shelf!
