"This
is my third Leine Basso, and like the others, the action never lets
up. Leine is the female Jack Reacher only she does it all without
being 6'5" and weighing 265 pounds, so that makes her more
incredible. If you like page-turners, you'll love this book." ~

And
you thought the Wild West was dead…
Leine and Mimi walked outside into the frigid air. Leine squinted against the brilliant blue sky, letting her eyes adjust from the darkness of the barn. Mimi crossed her arms against the cutting wind rattling the dried corn stalks in the field.
They were several feet from the back porch when a car door slammed shut in the front yard. Leine gestured for Mimi to freeze as she withdrew her gun and moved where she could see the driveway.
Four men in tactical vests had just exited a shiny black four-door pickup. The man in the lead had a semiautomatic pistol with a suppressor. The other three were armed with AR-15s. They headed for the door.
The lead gunman made it to the front porch first and signaled the second man, who hung back and waited for the other two to make their move. The first gunman eased his way up the concrete steps, gaze riveted on the door. He paused for a moment, then slowly turned the handle. Cracking the door open, he hesitated, then slipped inside. The second man followed while the third took a position on the steps, face out, scanning for threats. The fourth headed around the side of the house.
Leine sprinted back to Mimi.
“Come with me.”
Mimi’s face drained of color. “Who is it?”
Leine propelled her toward the barn. “Not sure, but they aren’t friendly.” Her terse comment left the young girl silent.
They raced across the yard and around the side of the barn. Leine stopped outside the broken window.
“Derek,” Leine called, her voice low and urgent.
Derek appeared out of the gloom. “What’s wrong?”
“Four gunmen. I’ll hide Mimi, then you and I need to set up.”
He glanced at Mimi. “You okay in the dark?”
“I guess,” she said, the wariness returning. “Why?”
He turned to Leine. “Storm cellar—north side of the barn. She’ll be safe there.”
EXCERPT 2 (Dakota Burn)
Leine waited a moment, but no one came through the rear. She moved to the back door and paused to listen. Not detecting anyone in the kitchen, Leine detached the wire connected to the nails and eased the screen door open. She froze and listened. Nothing. She reconnected the end of the filament wire to an anchor point inside the house and continued into the kitchen, 9mm leading the way.
Once there, she stopped again and listened. The ceiling creaked above her.
He’s upstairs.
She continued into the house, stopping at intervals to listen. When she reached the front room, Derek materialized from her left. The grenade had blown a chunk of the front porch out, leaving shards of glass and wood splinters scattered across the front yard. A bloody gunman lay facedown on the snow-covered yard. The man who’d been covering the front lay face up a few yards from the first. A bullet hole marred his forehead. There wasn’t a third body visible.
She acknowledged Derek and lifted her chin at the ceiling. Derek nodded, and held up one finger, confirming there was one gunman left. He cut a glance toward the kitchen. She signaled to let him know she’d armed the door.
The ceiling creaked again.
EXCERPT 3 (Dakota Burn)
Derek cut the lights as the SUV coasted to a stop. Leine peered at the terrain through a pair of night vision goggles, picking out the gravel drive leading to Sean’s man camp. High, thin clouds partially obscured the moon, giving their dark vehicle sparse cover in the wide expanse of prairie. The low, undulating hills Mimi had pointed out the day before lay between them and the camp.
“Let’s go the rest of the way on foot,” Leine said. “We can split up closer to the objective.”
“Copy that.” Derek parked his new rig, a forest green Suburban, and switched off the engine. He checked the overhead light to make sure it was turned off and then exited the vehicle. Leine did the same.
A field of stars littered the black sky. The crisp air hit her hard and she slid a dark knit cap from her pocket, pulling it on as she walked to the back of the SUV. A pair of tactical gloves went on next. Derek held the back door ajar. He handed her an AR-15 with a two-point sling, and three 30-round magazines, two of which she slid into the side pockets of her cargo pants. The other she snapped into the well of the assault rifle and pulled back the charging handle, chambering a round. She’d already holstered the loaded semiauto and had the hunting knife strapped to her calf.
“Here.” Derek handed her a quick-release tactical vest, which she put on under her down vest. A suppressor and extra magazines for the pistol went into the pockets.
He did the same with his, secured a bolt cutter to his belt, and attached a handful of zip ties to a snap link on the back of his vest.
“Let’s hope we don’t need any of this.”
“Amen.”
Derek eased the door closed, and the two of them set off over the frozen ground toward the camp.
A quarter mile from the rig they rounded the base of the rise and caught a glimpse of the camp. Leine and Derek each donned night vision goggles and scanned the area. A chain link fence surrounded the property, with a large gate near the front. Leine counted twelve separate structures. The largest one stood near the gate. No lights were on in the front trailer. Faint music and laughter could be heard somewhere on the other side of the compound.
“Good thing it’s not as big as the oil company man camps,” Derek said. “Those can house hundreds of workers. Way too many witnesses.”
DV
Berkom is the USA Today bestselling author of two action-packed
thriller series featuring strong female leads (Leine Basso and Kate
Jones). Her love of creating resilient, kick-ass women characters
stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and
thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those
pages.
Raised
in the Midwest, she earned a BA in political science and promptly
moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Several years and many
adventures later, she wrote her first novel and was hooked. The Kate
Jones adventure thriller, Bad Spirits, was first published in 2010 as
an online serial, and was immediately popular with Kindle and Nook
fans. Dead of Winter, Death Rites, and Touring for Death soon
followed before she began the far grittier Leine Basso thriller
series in early 2012 with Serial Date.
DV
currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mark, and
several imaginary characters who like to tell her what to do.
