Road to Eugenica ♥ Interview, Review & Giveaway ♥

Road to Eugenica

Yesterday, Drea Smith couldn’t do anything spectacular—even walking and texting at the same time was a challenge. But today, she suddenly has more answers than Google, can speak and understand numerous languages, and she can fight. Like a boss.

Seriously cool.

Drea has no idea where her encyclopedic knowledge has come from, but she’ll take it when she discovers someone out there knows her secret and wants her badly. And that they’ve been searching for her since she was born.

Since she was created.

With the help of her best friend Dylan, who just wants to keep her safe, and Maddox, a mysterious new boy who is prepared to get her answers, Drea will have to push her new skills to their limit as she uncovers nothing is quite what it seems.

As she uncovers…Eugenica.

 Interview
Question One: What was your inspiration behind this book?
This book was inspired in two parts. One was by my niece. She got me started reading and loving YA books, and after one of her favorite series ended in a way that, let’s say really upset her. I promised her I’d write her a book. I wanted a MC that had some of the same qualities as my niece and also has an arc where she discovers she’s stronger than she thinks. (And not just physically stronger.)
The second part of inspiration came from an internet ad about The Home of the Future. It was just a photograph of a high-tech house, but it made me stop and think, what would our society be like if we not only valued technology, but also a love and preservation of the environment? Those questions lead me to creating Eugenica.
Question Two: What genre would you classify your book to be?
Road to Eugenica has a little romance, mystery, suspense, and action but when I picture it on the bookshelf I always see it in the Science Fiction section.

Question Three: Who was your favourite character and why?
I know this should be a tough question, but really it isn’t. And while I of course adore all my characters, I have to say, Dylan is my favorite. While we’re in Drea’s perspective in Road to Eugenica we don’t really get to see all the cogs working inside Dylan’s head. He’s such a deep and complex character. I’m really excited that in book two we will get to see things in his perspective too. (Hint. Hint.)

Question Four: What did a normal day in Alexandrea's life look like before the book?
A normal day for Drea would be that of most teens. School, homework, hanging out with friends (or in her case Dylan) and of course her favorite hobby photography. If it was a weekend she’d most likely be on one of her mini-adventures with Dylan where they just go and do something away from the norm. Apple picking in hill country, heading to the Mexican border, or going anywhere Drea can capture some good shots for her gallery in her room.
Question Five: What can we expect next?
Well, like I mentioned before we can expect to get deeper into Dylan’s head in the next book. He’s going to be one of the perspective characters, and I can’t tell you how much fun it is to see things through his eyes. Lots more Eugenica. Their world. Their rules. Their future. And more twists and turns I hope the reader won’t necessarily expect, but will make sense to the story. Sorry. No spoilers.

I have mixed feelings about the Road to Eugenica. It was so outside the box and not what I expected. I was hooked on every page because I wanted to find out what was happening, but also a little scared to keep reading.

Alexandrea seems like an ordinary girl. She's in love with her best friend and trying her best to tackle high school. The day a new boy, Maddox starts school everything starts to get a little strange. She can suddenly understand and speak foreign languages. She isn't struggling with her education and she seems to know things she hasn't learnt. Dylan, her best friend has always been a big part of her life, but the new boy has caught her eye. Alexandrea's life is about to get crazy and not in a good way. Her happy bubble is about to be popped and there is no going back. Nothing is what it seems. No one can be trusted. She wants answers, but her life may be in danger.

Road to Eugenica is a suspense mystery like no other. Two dimensions and one link. It's strange and interesting. It's like nothing else I've read.
*There will be a sequel to this book and the next book will make or break this story.

3.5 stars out of 5. This book had me wanting more all the way through, but I'm not sure I liked the consequences.

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Hardened by centuries of torture, former blood slave, Gabriel Erhard, is driven by an insatiable need to destroy his enemies. Violence darkens his battered soul, leaving no place for mercy in his world. Gabriel’s only desire is vengeance—until he finds her.

Seized by vampires, bound as a slave, and placed on the auction block, Jordan Culver is instantly entranced by the dangerous male who claims her. Jordan’s new captor vows to set her free, but his haunted gaze burns with savage desire and his wicked kiss makes her crave his touch and...complete surrender.

While Gabriel battles his enemies, he will break every sacred law to achieve his ultimate goal—uniting the Outcast Society and creating a new vampire Clan. But the distracting human with mesmerizing violet eyes jeopardizes his plans. With very soft whisper she evokes his tormented memories, testing his sanity and challenging his every boundary. Can Jordan help him overcome the miseries of his past and find a future with her?

When Jordan heard Ross’s blood chilling growl, awareness plowed into her, overwhelming her delicate senses. The lights were blinding and she had to will her eyes to focus while the sounds of cracking bones and pained moans assaulted her ears. Her instincts recognized what her brain couldn’t seem to process, a fight had broken out.
As her vision cleared, Jordan swallowed a scream. The hostess lie in a heap on the floor, bodies of guards with their necks twisted and bone extending from distorted limbs were piled high, blocking the door.
This wasn’t a fight. She was in the middle of a battle and, thanks to Ross whose’s arm was like a steal band around her waist, she had the privilege of being front and center.
The nauseating sound of crushing vertebra drew Jordan’s gaze to the dark figure in the corner. He held a guard off the ground, his large, black leather clad hand wrapped around the weaker vampire’s throat. He guard’s neck snapped, his head wrenching to the side when the figure released him.

Had he done all this?
Ross slowly retreated until the heel of his boots hit the wall. Jordan could feel the chill of the winter storm seeping past the glass of the window behind them.
“Who the fuck are you?” Ross demanded.
The figure slowly turned. His perfectly black tailored suite with matching back shirt and tie were a striking contrast to the white walls. The black paisley bandana concealed his face, the fedora he wore cast shadows over his features. Thought she couldn’t see his eyes, she felt his burning gaze.
Oh, god. Was he the man who purchased her?
The dark male rolled his wide shoulders, ready and waiting for his next opponent. The distant pounding of boots splintered the strained silence that filled the room. Jordan recognized the sound. More guards.
“Who are you, asshole? Who do you work for?” Ross commanded.
The figure shook his head. “Give me the girl.”
His deep, rough voice brushed over her. Calming. Soothing. Enthralling. Jordan began to tremble.
Me. He wants me. Fear, hope, and…excitement quickened her pulse. She knew it was foolish to think this new vampire would be any better than the slave traders, but she now had the element of surprise on her side and a chance to escape. Ross would never share that she had killed two of his men. The dark figure was dangerous, but he would underestimate her like all the others. Jordan just needed to survive the moment. Ross was using her as a human shield. If the mysterious vampire attacked, she’d be a goner.
“You haven’t paid,” Ross sneered. He tightened his grip around her waist.
Jordan gasped in pain and the dark figure growled low, “Careful.”
Ross laughed. “Worried I might injure the little mortal?” His hand slipped around her throat, his fingers bruising. “I can break her neck if I want.” Ross nipped at the tip of her ear.
Jordan cringed and craned her neck, trying to turn away, but he held her firm. Using the only play open to her, Jordan turned toward Ross and sank her teeth into his cheek.
With a vicious roar, he shoved her away. Jordan fell hard to her knees, landing beside the hostess. She tried to stand, but her legs wouldn’t support her. God damn it, the drug was still in her system.
“Bitch!” Ross seethed. Grabbing her by the hair, he drew her up. “You’ll pay for that.”
Jordan spit his blood in his face and smiled when Ross’s eyes turned pure black with rage.
“Your death won’t be easy,” he hissed.
Jordan struggled for freedom, but her limbs remained useless.
Guards began to bang on the door. It wouldn’t be long until they busted in, sweeping the bodies aside. They would swarm the small office, kill the dark vampire, and Ross would punish her.
“Enough,” the figure commanded, his voice deathly calm.
Jordan was spun around, her back hitting Ross’s chest once more. His arm snaked around her middle his finger digging into her hip while his other hand continued to grip her hair.
The dark figure tore off the bandana, the fabric floated down to cover the face of his last victim. His long, gloved fingers gently pinched the brim of his hat. With a nonchalant air and smooth movement, he flipped the fedora from his head, tumbled it down his arm and carefully sat it on the desk.

Jordan sucked in a painful breath, her eyes going wide, her mouth falling open, her mind went numb. It couldn’t be him. He couldn’t be here. Not really. She must’ve finally lost it. Her mind must have finally cracked. She blink once, twice, three times and he remained there, standing just a grasp away.
He was even more stunning than she remembered. Strands of blond hair fell across his brow and framed the hard, sculpted lines of his face: perfectly square jawline, full lips, and defined cheekbones. Crystal green eyes, threaded with threads of obsidian, locked on her. His gaze was mesmerizing, beautifully dangerous. Entranced, Jordan reached for him. The tips of her fingers tingled. She wanted to touch him. She needed to touch him, to feel him, to make certain he was real, that he wasn’t just a figment of her imagination. A character created by her brain to help her cope with the horrific memories of the night she’d be captured. But he had been there. He’d come to see her preform. He’d followed her backstage.
“Gabriel Erhard,” Ross snarled.
Gabriel? Yes, yes! This was the man that had come to her show. This was the man who made her heart skip. The man that had offered her a record contract. No, he was the vampire that attacked Boras’s territories and freed the slaves. He had been her only hope for escape and he was here.
“Give me the girl.”
The pounding on the door intensified, the guards would be in any moment.
“All those raids on my warehouses,” Ross chuckled. “All the slaves you released.” His fingers squeezed around her throat. Jordan gasped for air. Her lungs began to burn. She clawed at his hand, her nails scratching, drawing blood. Still, Ross held her. “Have you been searching for her?”
The black shards swirled in Gabriel’s eyes, darkening the gentle green and bleeding in to the white until his gaze was completely consumed by wrathful darkness. Demon eyes. His lips pulled from his long, razor sharp fangs.
Ross growled, “She’s mine, Erhard!”
The door splintered, the bodies of the incapacitated guards were shoved aside as vampires rushed in, filling the room, surrounding Gabriel.
Ross pressed his lips against her temple and whispered, “You’ll never have her.”

Free
His grip on her throat eased as he swung her around. Glass shattered and rained down upon them, nicking her cheek, her arms, and legs. They were falling. Jordan managed to suck in enough air to scream.

Book Review:

Caressed by the edge of darkness is the fifth book in the Rulers of Darkness series. It's my first book by this author and can easily be read as a standalone.

Gabriel wants revenge on his enemies. They took his innocence and darkened his soul. He was beaten, starved and bought to the edge of death. He isn't a good man, in fact, he is a strong vampire and he knows revenge will be sweet. In his quest to bring down his enemies he comes across a human girl who plagues his dreams. For the first time, he finds himself wanting to help someone else.

Jordon is in trouble and that's putting it mildly. She's been drugged and tossed around like dirt. Luckily her innocence has kept her from the fate of her fellow captives. She has no hope of escape and her future is looking worse than her past. She is to be auctioned off to the highest bidder and used for god knows what. She's tried her best to escape, but she needs an angel. Gabriel is set to be her knight in shining armour, but he is no angel. He's king of a vampire clan and lost his heart long ago. He wants to help the girl and stop her fate being similar to his own. One look at Jordan and he's in big trouble. Can he let her go and give her a second chance at life? Maybe it isn't as simple as that. Maybe they can save each other.

Caressed by the edge of darkness is a will they/won't they sexual frustration book with some hot sexy scenes. It has an interesting backstory which will continue in other books from others points of view (I'm guessing). I really enjoyed this book and would happily read others in the series. What makes a king? This book may be fiction, but it's no fairytale. The story will continue, however, this chapter is closed and I was satisfied with the ending.

4.5 stars out of 5. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices #2)

Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices #2)

Review

Lord of shadows was fantastic! Obviously. I love Cassandra Clare's shadow hunters. These books are a nice 700ish Pages and I'm still disappointed when they end and I have to wait until December for the next one :(.

Emma and Julian are the perfect forbidding couple. Emma try's to prevent the inevitable. She and Mark are pretending to be a couple, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Kit has just lost his father and his place in the world. He now has to adjust. The shadow hunters have accepted him when others turn their backs. If only he knew what it meant to become one of them. He feels lost. He turns to what he does best and observes the institution.

Christina is about to get her own feature story and complicated love life. Perfect Diego may not be so perfect. She knows Mark isn't really dating Emma but his ex ends up back on the scene. It's all so complicated.

Then there is the mission and the institution to think about. A magical book containing the answers to all their problems is in the midst, but the magic is dark and has consequences. This book is full of twists and turns. I loved every minute. 5 stars out of 5.

 Excerpt

She stilled and the sensation disappeared once the man went into the elevator and was out of sight. Her pulse returned to normal. She waited another few seconds and headed back out into the dreary evening. The fog made the world seem darker.

Amy opened the door, head down, and walked right into a wall of muscled chest. Worried it was the man in the bowler hat, she swallowed a cry, stepped back into the foyer of the building and looked up at the man who was at least a foot taller than her. Her breath caught in her throat. Lucio Aussa still seemed larger than life.

"Amy Fields?" His rich tones were deeper and brought a chill of adult awareness.

She dropped her umbrella to the linoleum. She knelt down to pick it up, as did he. They almost bumped heads but she let him get her umbrella and he handed it back to her. "You're prettier than I remember."

"You remember me?" She straightened, her legs shaky.

"You're Evie's little sister." He stood too.

Right. Her stomach shouldn't flip. He had to get married soon, as the world knew, and her sister was the Fields girl he’d been interested in. It was too bad Evie intended to marry His Grace Michael Flynn, and be his duchess. Why was Lucio here, speaking to her right now? "That's right. My sister doesn't work with me or anything…”

"It's raining pretty heavily. Let me give you a ride." He opened the door, allowing a cool rush of air inside.

There was no reason her stomach should tense. His dark, shining hair curled over his ears and those dark brown eyes tempted her to swoon. Amy Fields never swooned. She lowered her head, her face hot with embarrassment. "I don't want to be a bother, Your Highness."

"I came to talk to you,” he said. “So it would be my pleasure, Amy."

He had? Her named rolled off his tongue with ease. Her chest warmed from his nearness, and her cheeks must be scarlet at this point. "If you’re here to order an analysis of your country, you’ll need to come back in the morning and sign a contract with my boss."

"I'm not here to hire you." A servant with a six-foot wide umbrella met them at the front door and Lucio led her toward his waiting limo on the street corner. "Not exactly anyway."

The servant opened the rear passenger door and she slid in across the leather seat. As Lucio closed the door, sitting so close to her their legs touched, she was rocketed back to high school Amy, who’d stared at him with longing as she wished he'd notice her, but then her sister would jump in front of her and throw herself at him. Evie had been relentless in her quest to one day be a princess. Amy shook off the memory as the car rolled down the street. She said, "I live out in Clapham."

"I know. You're doing pretty well for yourself." Drops of rain glistened on Lucio’s shoes. "I was hoping you'd join me for a quick dinner so we can talk."

Dinner? With him? It seemed like a dream where any second someone would yell “gotcha”, but she reigned in her imagination. He was a prince, and he’d belonged to Evie. She lifted her chin, intending to say no, but his brown eyes persuaded her to change her mind. "Okay. Dinner. I am curious, I’ll admit."

Giving in was a bad trait she needed to work on. His hand brushed against her leg but jerked back fast so she knew it had been an accident. However, the jolt she felt was unexpected. "Thanks." He turned toward the driver. "Please take us to Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester."
