Even though this is a prequel to the first three Vanderlind Castle books, it is best to read the story as book 4. The idea for Call of the Vampire came to me from my subscription to A Word a Day. The word that day was "Aurorean" - of or belonging to the dawn - and I thought, "What a lovely name Aurora is for a vampire." But then I thought, "No, Aurora is the name of the girl the vampire loves." Call of the Vampire pretty much wrote itself after that.
