Evie is bored with her life. She lives in a care home, Sheldon lodge. Every day is the same. She wants some excitement. She doesn't want to live the life everyone expects. It's dull and too predictable.

From Ireland to Liverpool and beyond. A little winning can go a long way. She meets some interesting characters and finds a second life.

Evie's son Brendan loves his mother. His life has also become something he didn't expect. His wife doesn't look at him the way she once did. Their lives are too routine. Evie is about to shake things up for them too. Evie has run off from the care home and Brendan has to track her down. A road trip across countries is in order. Brendan and his wife need a getaway this just wasn't what they had in mind.

At 75 life doesn't have to be predictable. Live life to the full and enjoy your self. A Grand Old Time wasn't quite the read I expected but it was an okay read. Evie is unpredictable and a risk taker. She has her son chasing her. It's what he needs he just doesn't know it at the time.

This book is for the rebellion at heart. Evie wasn't really my cup of tea and I would recommend you start with a sample of this books first. Evie isn't really a book reader :s. She also didn't start with a plan. I felt she was a little too naive and this story quite easily could have ended in disaster.

Review:

My feelings about Clean are all over the place. It's gritty, harsh and so wrong. Drug addiction will turn anyone inside out. It has the good, bad and ugly. This is Lexi's story and I'll warn you now it's not pretty.

Lexi is a Russian heiress who lives in London. She has access to too much money and doesn't have to work for anything. Her brother sees her downfall. If she doesn't turn her life around this story could only end one way.

Lexi is taken to rehab. She needs it but first, she has to see she has a problem. The rehab clinic is for young adults and is located on an Island. Lexi's drug addiction is so bad she literally takes what is offered. Kurt her boyfriend is also a drug addict and so are most of her friends. Her brother is hoping rehab will take her away from her lifestyle and get her back on a straight path.

Clean tells the story of how Lexi became in her situation and the consequences. It's horrifying to know this is a reflection of addiction. The story is what you would expect. Lexi doesn't appreciate how lucky she is. Everything has always been easy for her. Now she has to struggle to find a future. Her ending is happy but there is no going back.

This book does have some dark humour. It also has adult themes including some which readers may find disturbing. It doesn't glamorise drug use.

Lexi is a good leading character. I didn't feel sorry for her. She made her own decisions. She's a strong character and true to herself. She comes from money and is comfortable in her own skin.

It has left me a little uncomfy to whether I liked the book or not. A raw story for a gritty read. The book definitely leaves a funny taste in the mouth. The ending is perfect for this book. This book is well thought out, the writing is really good and the storyline is interesting.

I didn't love this book but I didn't hate it. I've decided to rate it 3 stars. It has its highs and its lows. I wish I could give this book 5 stars and 1 at the same time.

Dr. Webb was lurching toward the church out of the mist, something terribly off about his halting gait. More specifically, he was lurching toward Mr. Young.
            “Are you all right, Dr. Webb?” Mr. Young called, the former joy in his voice replaced now with concern for the other man.
            “Merry!” Lady Grace called out a warning. “Don’t go any farther!”
            “But can’t you all see?” Mr. Young said, still walking forward. “Poor Dr. Webb is sick.”
            Yes, Dr. Webb was sick. His clothing and general appearance were all disheveled. And he smelled bad, too, the duke realized, as a rotting stench made its way to his nostrils, which flared in response. Why, the smell was similar to that which had enveloped the dead valet, his dead valet, yesterday. Perhaps Dr. Webb had acquired the wretched smell while tending to some poor person in the village?
            Dr. Webb still lurched, his arms spreading out now as Mr. Young approached.
            “Merry, please!” Lady Grace cried. Then she moved to step forward herself, no doubt to try to stop Mr. Young, but Benedict Clarke held her back, catching her with one arm around the waist.
            And now Mr. Young was opening his arms wide, too, as though to warmly greet the returning doctor, but when their bodies met and the doctor embraced him, he immediately began to chew on the closest part of Mr. Young’s body that was available to him, which, in this case, happened to be his upper arm.
            The duke watched, frozen in horror as no doubt the others were, too, as the doctor chewed through Mr. Young’s jacket and shirt, straight down to the flesh beneath. It might have been almost comical, were it not so downright horrifying.
            Among the things you never expect to see in life: one human being attempting to feed on another like an animal.

 

Book Review: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥


Zombie Abbey is the first book of this kind I've read. I know there are quite a lot of this kind of books out there and I was curious. I didn't know what to expect and once I signed up I'll admit I was a little scared to read it.

Porthampton Abbey has similarities to Downtown Abbey. The wealthy family with 3 female daughters; Lizzy, Grace and Kate. A well-orchestrated staff with a butler, footmen, maids and even a cat. The cast is quirky and fitting to the times.

Katherine Clarke is the eldest sister of 3. She needs to marry well if she wants to continue enjoying the finer things in life. The upstairs story is set and we are straight into hearing about a strange death in the village. The hot stable boy's uncle was the deceased. Will Harvey has always had a set place at Porthampton Abbey. He may be handsome, but not good enough for a Lady. Kate is taught to stay away from him even though she would like to know him better.



Meanwhile downstairs Fanny Rogers is preparing the house for the day. She has many tasks, but her mind is set firmly on the gossip. What a strange death.

Lizzy wants to marry for love. She isn't interested in entertaining the suitors her father has invited to the house for Katherine. Grace is her total opposite and desperate to impress. They are all different and they all need to get their priorities in order before it's too late. People are dropping dead, but it's the living who may lose their life.

This had a good historical story. The upper class too snobby to see what is in front of them and the lower class having big dreams. The zombie element gives the story a spooky, but comical twist. It weaned out the brave, the stupid and the downright crazy.

I love taboo romance novels but this one went too far. It was messed up with a capital F. The sexy scenes were hot but not enough to save the book. I wanted Liam to get his wife back... if he wanted her. I've read a few of Opal Carew's books and have enjoyed them but I'm sorry this one is a no from me.

Abi has a close network of friends who are entangled with her family. She married one, Liam but should have held out for Del. A wedding brings these three together. Abi sleeps with her husband and Del says he's willing to give there romance a chance. Abi can't keep her legs closed. She gets pregnant by her husband. Liam has always wanted a baby with his wife but she wants to be with Del. It's so F***'d up.

Scandal, drama and a lot of sex.

You'll either hate it or love it. The ending makes sense and has a happy ever after.
